Amica Marathon Donates to RMH Providence

On December 2, the Ronald McDonald House of Providence received a check for $10,000 that was raised through the 2010 Amica Marathon, according to Eident Sports Marketing.

John Mathews and Brewer Rowe from Eident presented the check to Michael Fantom, CEO of the Ronald McDonald House of Providence. “We are extremely grateful to receive this generous support from the Amica Marathon,” Fantom said. “Support from the community allows the (Ronald McDonald) House to provide programs that allow families to spend additional time with a sick child, help ease financial burdens, provide a sense of normalcy and keep families together during times of medical crisis.”

The nonprofit Ronald McDonald House of Providence provides programs that directly improve the health and well being of hospitalized children and their families. Since its doors opened more than 20 years ago, it has served as a temporary home to thousands of families whose children received medical care for premature birth, serious injury, illness or surgery.

The Ronald McDonald House is one of three charities that benefitted from the 2010 Amica Insurance.

Nearly 5,000 runners participated in the 2010 Amica Marathon, which was held Oct. 17 in Newport. The event featured the Amica Marathon, UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon and Team Relay. Runners, ranging in age from 15 to 76, came from as far away as Australia to compete in the event, which showcased the City by the Sea.

Nick Menzies of Boston was the winner of the 2010 Amica Marathon. He completed the 26.2-mile scenic course in 2:42:23. The win was his first victory in a marathon. Michelle Gosselin of Providence was the top female. She recorded a winning time of 3:05:28.

Roland Lavallee took the crown in the UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon. A biology teacher and cross-country coach at Mount St. Charles Academy, Lavallee won his first half marathon in 1:06:40. Elizabeth Foster, the 2009 Amica Marathon winner, crossed the finish line first among the women in 1:23:40.

Amica Insurance is the title sponsor of the Amica Marathon.
