Joan Ashley
Joan's relationship with the House started when she was an elementary school teacher. Each year, she would introduce her students to community service projects and the House was a natural fit. The projects varied over the years, but they often raised money or collected wish list items.
As the House grew, Joan’s class kept completing service projects. She soon began to grow more involved by participating in the annual Walk Festival. Then when she retired, Joan decided to become a weekly volunteer.
Over the past few years, Joan has extended her service to the Family Room and to several of our fundraising events. She feels that it is extremely rewarding to engage other friends and groups in House events such as her favorite, the Clambake. Joan also brings a women’s group from her church to cook at the House.
Joan says, “I always look forward to coming here; you are always appreciated and people always say thank you. It’s really the people that make me come back week after week. It’s the staff and volunteers; you really feel like you’re a part of something.”
